Electric cars have not been known for their speed and power. As far as most of the produced units in the market are concerned, they don't really compare to the fastest petrol-power cars out there. Well that's probably the case until the next few months as some car manufacturers are trying to build some electric supercars that may ultimately kill petrol-powered ones very soon.

Auto Express has some piece news over here detailing a test run of an electric supercar by Audi. This is just a production prototype of the Audi e-tron, which has been spied testing in Germany just a few weeks before Mercedes Benz's AMG division launches its electric SLS.

Given Germany's engineering strength, it's not really surprising that two of its automobile manufacturers are now on the race to dominate the world of electric supercars. The Audi e-tron was first introduced in the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, wherein Audi claimed that the production unit wold have a total of 4500Nm of torque upon start. That's about six times the torque of the most powerful petrol-powered engines that we currently have.

The concept car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, although the top speed will be capped at 125 mph once it is released to the public. This is, of course, for the safety of everyone.

If the production succeeds, we'll really see a new age in the design of electric supercars. We can now say that electric cars are not as slow as we first thought them to be. This is already on top of the fact that electric cars are more suited to the environment than what we have right now.With petrol-based energy sources getting scarcer, it's essential that people turn to new ways in order to power their machines. It's just a bonus that the electric cars appear to be even faster.

Overall, it's a win-win situation for everyone.
