In a monumental event over the weekend, the City of London unveiled a join collaboration product with Lotus Engineering, the Fuel Cell Black Cab, the first hydrogen-powered black taxi in continental Europe.

The hydrogen powered black cab is London's answer to the ever polluted air, as it emits nothing but water vapor. Aside from its highly efficient features, the fuel cell black cab is also capable of running for 80 miles per hour.

The black cab has a range of 250 miles, and can be recharged in just under five minutes. This very feature makes it a highly practical alternative to gasoline or diesel powered taxicabs in London and across the globe.

“The black cab is a London icon but it is also a source of pollution. This prototype, which emits only water from its tailpipe, is a glimpse of how hydrogen technology could soon play a vital role in cleaning up air quality.” said Deputy mayor Kit Malthous.

By 2012 ,the city looks forward to having installed six hydrogen filling stations and hopes to run 20 to 50 hydrogen powered taxis. Also part of the plans is to extend the platform from the taxi to the bus lines and hopes to have about hydrogen powered buses in 2 years.
