General Motors Reached Zero Landfill Status

If you guys are asking what the fudge a Zero Landfill status is, then I guess you need to check the latest environmental documentaries. Obviously, a zero landfill status is reaching the state of not throwing any part of a tangible product into a garbage can, and yes, in a landfill.

And so the mighty General Motors has finally reached this status, claiming that they are 100% environmentally friendly. According to the becoming-giant-again Detroit automaker, 97% of wasted materials at the plant are being reused or recycled while the remaining 3% are burnt to produce energy.

It was in 2008 that GM announced its willingness to achieve this status and said that their aim is to put at least 50% of all their plants to zero landfill status by the end of 2010. Well, 2010 is still far from adding another year to it and General Motors has already reached zero landfill status for 43% of all their plants.

“We’ve been working for quite some time at eliminating waste and developing support systems to recycle or reuse wastes we can’t yet eliminate,” explained Mike Robinson, General Motors vice president of Environment, Energy and Safety policy. “These plants have taken this process to its highest level. They are leading General Motors and the worldwide manufacturing industry.” he added.

Zero landfill status has been achieved in many GM plants worldwide. In North America alone, 27 facilities were already converted while 21 facilities in Asia-Pacific and Latin-America as well as 14 more in Europe are already zero landfill status plants.
