Sports utility vehicles (SUVs) will continue to become popular among many people because of a number of reasons. For one, there's a higher driving position, which means you'll be able to see more of the road ahead. This is important if you are unsure about the terrain that you'll be driving on. There's also a versatile load-carrying capability that allows you to bring more bags than what you normally do. Finally, there's always more room for people to place themselves in.

But SUVs can be pretty expensive if you don't know where to look for bargains. It can also be pretty expensive if you bought something that does not fit or something that overestimates your driving habits. Clearly, a lot of consideration has to be put on the table before you buy an SUV.

First consideration should be the size of the SUV. How much people are you going to put inside your vehicle in the first place? Remember that the larger the vehicle, the more gasoline you consume. So if you aren't really getting a lot of people in your vehicle, then better stick with the smaller SUVs. This also goes for the terrain that you usually run on. No use getting a truck-based model if you're always in the city in the first place.

And if ever you decide to get a used SUV model instead of a new one (these ones are remarkably cheaper than their new counterparts), make sure that the necessary safety equipment are in place. SUVs tend to be more susceptible to rollover. Get an SUV that has a working electronic stabilization system and, of course, curtain airbags.

Finally, after you've considered the engines, the fuel economy, your needs, and the safety equipments, it's time to give the car a test run. You may be new to the higher seating position of an SUV so you should get yourself acquainted with the feeling during your test run. There are usually controls that allow you to adjust the seat height, so take advantage of this.
